DC neighborhoods haven’t always been so defined. Only last year, I learned that I had wrongly been telling everyone my whole life that I lived in Tenleytown when I, in fact, lived in North Cleveland Park. The area almost all Washingtonians know as simply Downtown (or if you’re being more specific, “between Dupont and the White House”) is actually part of the Golden Triangle Business Improvement District. Though the district actually has 63 sides – 60 more than what qualifies as a triangle – the nonprofit organization that runs its programs are very committed to making Downtown a more fun place. For example, they recently held their fifth annual poetry contest, in which winners had their poems displayed on signs throughout the neighborhood. Many of the district’s events take place in Farragut Square, a grassy park next to the Farragut North and Farragut West Metro stations. Here are some free recurring or special events throughout the summer:

Note: for exercise events, you must register with the class. Bring your own mat but all other equipment is provided.

Yoga: every Tuesday, 5:30-6:30 PM

If you’re trying to get fit and feel more meditative while on a budget this event is for you. These free classes are incredibly popular though, so get there early. Held in Farragut Square.

Barre: every Wednesday, 5:30-6:30 PM

For those trying to get swole on a budget, these free classes are suns-out-guns-out fun! The classes are often set to exercise music and use special barre equipment as well. Held in Farragut Square.

Pilates: every Thursday, 5:30-6:30 PM

If you like the idea of yoga, just not the meditative and soul-searching parts, check out this class. Like yoga, the pilates classes are also very popular so show up early to grab the best spot. Held in Farragut Square.

Farragut Fridays: every Friday, 5:30-6:30 PM

As the name suggests, fun and varying activities are held every Friday at Farragut Square. The time I went there was giant chess, ping pong, and bean bag toss. Highly recommend for a fun half-hour, though you can spend most of the day there if you like.

Picnic in the Park: most Wednesdays and Thursdays, 12:00-2:00 PM

Picnic in the Park is very similar to Farragut Fridays, it’s just held at Murrow Park on Wednesdays and Monroe Park on Thursdays. It has a more lunch-and-business focused atmosphere than Farragut Fridays, but there are still plenty of fun games and activities

Golden Cinema: every Friday, 7:30-9:30 PM

The Golden Triangle will be holding free movie screenings every Friday evening throughout the summer starting June 1st up until August 3rd. Upcoming movies include “The Post,” “La La Land,” “Coco,” and “Black Panther.” Held in Farragut Square.
