Remembering Jackie Scotland, rooted in the Wilson community

Franny Jensen

Jackie Scotland was devoted to every single plant in Wilson’s greenhouse. No matter how dead the plant may have seemed, she would find some way to bring life back into it. This mindset was also reflected in her love for students—she never wanted anyone sitting around or feeling left out, and always made sure everyone had a job to do and a friend to do it with.

Scotland died at the end of June. She was a substitute teacher at Wilson for over a decade and was a beloved sister, daughter, and teacher, and a devoted church member.

Most Wednesday afternoons, after she had finished teaching as a substitute for the day, Scotland would head to Wilson’s greenhouse. Her familiar face welcomed everyone to come and join in. Heleny Cook, a former Wilson teacher and greenhouse helper, described Scotland as “a spirit of love that believed every living thing was something to be cared and loved for.”

She made a constant effort to have the Greenhouse Club branch out and find other ways to work with the community. On Thursdays, Greenhouse Club members would head over to Janney Elementary School and work with the children to sell their own produce as well as our own. Scotland was a lovely person throughout and will be missed greatly by all who knew her.
