Girls

The girls varsity basketball team has had a season filled with ups and downs. Despite their struggles against out-of-conference opponents, losing six of 11 games, they have dominated the DCIAA. The Lady Tigers are undefeated in their conference with a 7-0 record. They are putting up video game numbers, beating School Without Walls 55-9 and HD Woodson 70-14. Junior guard Tara Cousins believes that, “The communication we have as a team and the relationships we have built over the season really help us play well together.”

A great deal of this success can be attributed to the team’s leadership. Team captain Edmee Brown-Eque has been a great teammate on and off the court. She averages 13.9 points a game and scored a season high of 20 points against West Potomac. Tara Cousins has been another offensive force for the Lady Tigers. She leads the team in scoring with 14.5 points per game, and also holds the team record for most points in a game this season, dropping 28 against West Potomac.

Boys

The boys varsity basketball team started off the season with a 14-5 record. They have lost to the likes of IMG Academy, Mountain Brook, and DeMatha, but team members say that these defeats have only helped them grow.

“We have faced a lot of adversity so far, but we are still a solid team,” says Darren Buchanan Jr, a 6’5’’ freshman.
The team is headed by seniors Jay Heath and Makhi and Makhel Mitchell. “They are all making me better on and off the court,” says Buchanan. Heath is the Tiger’s primary ball-handler and is responsible for creating open shots for himself and his teammates. The Mitchell twins have proven to be key additions, dominating the paint on both ends of the floor. The trio has also set an aggressive tone on defense with tight man-to-man coverage.

Wilson is known for their up-tempo play and emphatic alley-oop slams. Wilson fans are showing up in copious numbers to cheer on the exciting squad.

The Tigers are off to another solid start in their quest for another DCSAA ring. At 16-8, they look poised for deep DCIAA and DCSAA runs yet again. You can catch the Tiger’s next game at McKinley Tech tonight at 7:30 p.m.
