AP classes are challenging for any student—that’s kind of the point. But for an English Language Learner (ELL) student, the obstacles encountered in advanced classes are tenfold. Several ELL students who are enrolled in AP classes spoke to The Beacon about their experiences.

“At first I thought that because I was a Spanish speaker, the AP Spanish Literature and Culture class would be easy for me, but the truth is that it was not. Never in my life did I think I was going to write so many essays, read so much, and answer as many questions about a reading as I did in my AP class,” began Carlos Pérez, a sophomore originally from Venezuela. “But I realized that that’s the point in taking an AP class: to give your best effort and appreciate the opportunity you have to get rid of paying another loan from college.” Without a doubt, AP classes have a great benefit for all students: if you receive a score of three or higher on the exam, you can receive college credit, depending on the university.

Brayanth Guidicelli, a Venezuelan junior at Wilson, had a similarly enriching and difficult journey in APs this year. “In my AP Computer Science class I learned a lot. It greatly enriched my knowledge of computer science, and every day I learned something new and important. I think it’s a very good option for someone who is focused on a particular area because they expand your knowledge and grow academically,” he said.

Perhaps the biggest challenge of AP classes for ELL students is the language barrier. “During my tour of an AP class, the biggest challenge was being able to express myself. Not because of the difficulty of the subject, but because of my trouble freely sharing my thoughts and opinions in English, because it is a second language that I still have to perfect more,” Guidicelli said.

Senior Claudia Centeno, from El Salvador, also found language to be an obstacle. “A challenge that cost me a lot was participating in classes. The first few days I didn’t want to talk because I didn’t feel my answers were good enough compared to other answers from my classmates,” Centeno explained. Eventually, she confided her insecurities in her teacher. “She answered that there were no wrong answers in her class because she knew that every student had grown up in different environments and cultures.”

At the end of any school year, students reflecting on their satisfaction with their courseload helps others decide what classes to sign up for in the future. These three clearly recommend try AP despite the necessary challenges. “AP classes are excellent and worthwhile because they give an idea of how the classes will be in college and help students become more critical thinkers,” Centeno said. “Besides that, you study topics from perspectives that aren’t present in normal high school classes.” •

Las clases de AP ya son un gran reto para un estudiante medio—ese es el punto. Pero para un estudiante inmigrante, los obstaculos encontrados en las clases avanzadas son diez veces. Varios estudiantes de ELL que tomaron el reto de inscribirse en las clases de AP hablaron con El Beacon acerca de sus experiencias.

“Al principio creí que por ser hispano hablante la clase de AP de literatura y cultura en español iba a ser fácil para mí, pero la verdad es que no lo fue ni lo es. Nunca en mi vida pensé que iba a escribir tantos ensayos, leer tanto, y responder a tantas preguntas sobre una lectura como lo hice en mi clase de AP”, Carlos Perez, un estudiante de segundo año de Venezuela, comenzó. “Pero me di cuenta de que de eso se trata tomar una clase AP, de dar tu mayor esfuerzo y apreciar la oportunidad que tienes de deshacerte de pagar un crédito más de la universidad.” Sin duda, las clases de AP tienen un gran beneficio para todos los estudiantes: Si recibes una puntuación de tres o más en el examen, puedes recibir crédito universitario, dependiendo de la universidad.

Brayanth Guidicelli, un estudiante de Venezuela del grado 11, tenía un viaje enriquecedor y difícil en APs este año. “En mi clase de AP Ciencia de Computadoras aprendí un montón, enriqueció mucho mi conocimiento de ciencias computacionales y todos los días aprendí algo nuevo e importante. Creo que es una muy buena opción para alguien que está enfocado en un área particular porque amplias mucho tu conocimiento y crecer académicamente.”

El idioma también es otro reto que un estudiante inmigrante debe superar. “Durante mi recorrido en una clase de AP el mayor desafío fue la habilidad de expresarme a mí mismo. No debido a la dificultad del tema, sino a la habilidad de compartir libremente mis pensamientos y opiniones en inglés, pues es una segunda lengua que aún tengo que perfeccionar más”, Guidicelli dijo. Sin lugar a dudas, las primeras clases de AP para un estudiante inmigrante siempre serán un reto por ser tan diferentes de las clases regulares, pero no es algo imposible, ya que en el proceso el mismo estudiante aprende a vencer sus miedos y logra superarse a sí mismo.

Claudia Centeno, una estudiante de El Salvador del grado 12, tambien encontró el idioma como obstaculo. “Un desafío que me costó mucho fue participar en clases. Los primeros días no quería hablar porque no sentía que mis respuestas eran los suficientemente buenas en comparación a otras respuestas de mis compañeros”, Centeno explicó. Eventualmente, ella confío sus inseguridades en su maestro. “Ella me contestó que no había respuestas incorrectas en su clase porque sabía que cada estudiante había crecido en diferentes ambientes y culturas.”

Al finalizar el año escolar, los estudiantes que reflexionen sobre su satisfacción con su carga de curso ayudan a otros a decidir qué clases inscribirse en el futuro. Estos tres claramente recomiendan probar AP a pesar de los desafíos necesarios. “AP son excelentes y que valen la pena tomarlas porque les enseñan cómo serán las clases en la universidad y les hacen mucho más críticos”, dijo Centeno. “Además de que uno estudia temas desde perspectivas que no se presentan en las clases normales de la secundaria.”
