Senior Emperor Campell has been a track star since fifth grade, but he really started picking up the pace junior year. “I took it seriously [during the] outdoor season of junior year,” Campbell said when discussing his start to track and field. He stays fit by taking it “day by day,” and often uses the weight room and consistent practice to achieve his goals

His events are shotput and discus, and he placed first for discus in the 2019 DCSAA Championship. When asked if he could see track and field being a part of his college life, he said that his plan was to do just that, especially since eleventh grade. “After junior year outdoor season, I made it my goal to go to college for track and field,” he said. It’s a goal that has been accomplished, via offers from D1 schools Mount St. Mary’s University and Delaware State University.

Campbell uses left-handed American discus thrower Reginald “Reggie” Jagers as inspiration. Jagers won a gold medal at the Summer Universiade in 2017, and bronze in the 2019 Pan American Games. Campbell is left-handed as well, and uses technique from the decorated athlete. Like many other dedicated athletes, another way he gets more insight on his sport is research— he’s “still learning the ins and outs of track and field… it requires a specific practice and attention to detail.”

Also like many other dedicated athletes, the senior’s favorite aspect of track and field is winning. Other than that, it’s “the atmosphere. Everyone coming together to see each other compete. Seeing the fastest runs, farthest jumps, and throws, is just really exciting and fun to be around,” which makes sense, considering his final remarks being “join the Wilson track team, we have a long history of winning and great experiences.”
