Soul food restaurant provides a delicious taste of the South
May 24, 2021
Located in Eastern Market, District Soul Food Restaurant & Lounge offers a large variety of crowd-pleasing southern favorites at a reasonable price.
I ordered the Sweet Potato Hush Puppies as an appetizer, which was my favorite part of the meal. They were delicious and sweet, especially with the honey butter that came with it. These hush puppies came with enough for me to share with my Dad as well, so the portions were substantial and certainly filling. For the main course, I ordered the Shrimp Po’Boy sandwich, which I savored because of how well seasoned the shrimp was and how the tangy remoulade sauce complimented the sandwich. It was topped with lettuce, tomato, and remoulade sauce on a toasted french roll. For my drink, of course I had sweet tea, because what is a soul food restaurant without sweet tea?
As for the restaurant itself, it is very spacious and has two floors, so there is plenty of seating available. It was dimly lit, and the decor was very simple, with mostly black dining furniture. When we entered the restaurant to pick up our food, there was a live band with a drummer, saxophonist, and guitar player, which was a great touch and added to the overall ambiance of the establishment. The overall atmosphere was very relaxed and cozy, and a place for people to dine with their friends. It was definitely a hangout spot that catered to adults, with live music, a DJ, and a hookah/cigar lounge. The service was decent; the waiter was very respectful, but not very attentive to us and seemed to be rushing. There was a bit of a wait for the food, which wasn’t a big deal, but we hoped that it would be quicker.
Overall, I would give this restaurant 4 out of 5 stars; the food was delicious and the restaurant is nice, but the service isn’t top-notch. Regardless, I would definitely go again and recommend it to others.
