Want visual thrill? Varying character personalities? An incredible score? Look no further than Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune”. 

The story follows Paul Atreides, a young man, and his royal family as they are directed by the emperor to take control of the most valuable planet in the universe. Unknowingly, their new rule sparks a war between the natives and enemy invaders.

There is much to unpack from the film, from all kinds of beauty, to characters, to pace. The film is a little slow moving at points, but it can only be expected, as we’ve seen similar traits in Villenueve’s “Arrival” and “Blade Runner 2049”. The continuously slow pace really brings out the meaning of the action scenes throughout the movie. 

The cinematography of the film is some of the most beautiful you’ll find. The shots throughout, from planet to planet, are outstanding and contribute so much to the tone of the story, as we see varying captures of beauty. The score is magnificent, but what else should we expect from the greatest composer of all time, Hanz Zimmer? Along with Zimmer, the cast of the film is loaded: Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Jason Mamoa, Zendaya, Dave Bautista, Josh Brolin, the list goes on. 

It would have been nice to see a little more screen time from certain characters that stood out during their scenes, as the only character we really had the time to feel a connection to was Timothée Chalamet’s Paul. However, Paul was perhaps the only one we really needed to get to know. His character development throughout the movie is super interesting and holds so much significance. The foreshadowing that we see revolving around Paul is nothing short of brilliant, as it gives us a better understanding of what’s going on inside his head.

Still, the premise of the film can’t be fully described in words, it’s something you need to see for yourself. After watching “Dune”, I am not at all disappointed and highly recommend you do the same.
