Only in its third year, the Wilson Ultimate Frisbee team has already received some impressive accolades and awards, and is becoming a serious contender against teams that have been around much longer.
Last week, USA Ultimate, the governing body for Ultimate Frisbee in the United States, released the All-State Ultimate Frisbee teams for all 50 states. In Maryland, eight players were named to the First Team, including Wilson’s own juniors, Jake Radack and Avi Taylor. Since Wilson is one of the few Ultimate clubs in D.C., they play in Maryland and are therefore eligible to be named to the All-State team.
Wilson’s Ultimate team finished in second place in the Maryland State Ultimate tournament last spring, impressing and surprising coaches and players throughout the state. The selections for the All-State team are decided by a vote of the coaches of all the Ultimate teams in Maryland. Wilson’s placement undoubtedly called attention to the relatively new squad and coaches took notice.
In addition to Radack and Taylor, Wilson’s Duncan Fitzgerald was one of seven to be named to the Second Team and coach Jackson Dolan won Coach of the Year for the state of Maryland. “To have three of our players selected is a huge honor,” said Taylor “but none of our success would have been possible without our coach Jackson.”
The honors are bound to help Wilson place in future seeding at tournaments and also get more invitations to different competitions. “To get recognized for our performance is always cool, and it really shows how far our team has come since Jake and I started the team our freshmen year,” said Taylor.
The Ultimate team looks to bounce back for another successful season in the spring. Hoping for just as good, if not better, placement in the State Tournament, Taylor and Radack will try to captain the team to more victories in 2015.
