Blinged-out students: Jewelry in Jackson-Reed

Will Nichols and Giacomo Tomaino

Jewelry has become ever-present in Jackson-Reed’s fashion. Jewelry serves as the focal point of students’ outfits and can represent a meaningful experience or aspect of their personality. To learn more about what people are wearing right now, we’ve asked students at Jackson-Reed to share what their pieces mean to them.

“The earrings add to the outfit,” said freshman Amina Brown. “The ring reminds me of Cape Cod where my grandparents live,” said freshman Maddie Kern. “The bracelet is appealing to look at,” said junior Charlotte Crean. Even though there are many reasons as to why students wear jewelry, one thing is certain. We need to express ourselves beyond words.

Jewelry of all qualities has become more accessible to students. This is why many of our interviewees have had jewelry at a young age. This can be a good or bad thing because craftsmanship has, in some ways, been traded for production and quality.

When we asked Amina and Fiona if they focus on price or appearance when buying jewelry, they both said price. However they still found something they like wearing. We believe that it is better for jewelry to be better priced rather than priced expensively so it’s more accessible to students.

Jewelry also can be used to express yourself through appearance. There are many different types of jewelry that suit a person. Whether it’s by religious purposes, hobbies or by appearance, we are sure everyone has something they would like to show about themselves. For example, Crean has been making bracelets for a long time. She creates patterns and designs to represent things she enjoys. Such as album covers, movies, animals and logos. •
