Taylor Swift’s 10th studio album, Midnights, is a collection of her deepest insecurities, encounters with love, and sources of vengeance. At midnight on October 21, Swift shared the thoughts that kept her up at night.

‘Midnights’ turns away from the lyrical depth of her two most recent albums, “Folklore” and “Evermore,” and shifts to an unwavering pop sound reminiscent of ”1989” and ”Lover”. As Taylor Swift constantly changes her sound from album to album, listeners have to change with it or admire it from afar. 

One track that stood out to me was “Anti-Hero”, an example of what Swift does very well: combining an upbeat rhythm with darker lyrics. It conveys feelings of Swift’s public persona being too big and loud and that, as several listeners can relate to, she sees herself as the problem. 

Another very personal song that stood out was “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve”, which was about Swift looking back regretfully on decisions she made in the past. 

One of the only disappointments on the album was “Snow On The Beach”, featuring Lana Del Rey. Although the song was meant to be a collaboration, Del Rey can only be heard on background vocals. I expected her to have a solo verse, or at least more than a few lines. 

The other disappointments were the cliche lyrics. Sometimes artists have to sacrifice better songwriting for a catchier tune, however, the lyrics were so cheesy that it almost ruined certain songs.  

All in all, I enjoyed listening to this album. If you want more lyrical depth, I would stick to previous albums. If you just want something fun, Midnights is the perfect album for you. •
