An Ode to Mount Pleasant
May 3, 2023
Dear Mount Pleasant,
Today I set my alarm for 7:45 am. I showered, packed my bags, and had a cup of coffee. I’m living the good life, to say the least.
After moving to this sleepy little neighborhood, bounded by Rock Creek Park, Harvard Street, and 16th Street, I have managed to avoid the awkward morning scramble to catch the bus, that almost any DC public transit commuter has had to endure. With a bus stop at literally every corner in Mt. P, missing the bus is never an issue, and sleeping in, is always guaranteed. Though this is just a fraction of the wonders darling Mount Pleasant has to offer.
Mt. P never fails to produce friendly neighbors and a strong sense of community.
I have come to learn the name of every dog that lives on each block along with the name of their owner, and the name of their owner’s girlfriend. Imagine living in Gilmore Girls, except with the occasional burglary invasion, and creepy stare-downs from men standing around Lamont Plaza.
During spring, Mount Pleasant especially thrives. The neighborhood, a historic district, is filled with traditional and old townhouses, hugged by bright greenery and fresh flowers. With such a picture, I fight a constant battle to bring my sorry self to Jackson-Reed and Tenleytown every day.
Particularly during the spring, the Mount Pleasant Plaza never fails to attract a certain type of skater. As I run to the conveniently placed convenience store, Argyle, for a quick midday pick-me-up, I can’t help but stop and appreciate the abundance of skater boys circling the square.
I also must emphasize the abundance of charming family businesses that brings the area to life (and all within arms reach). Along Mount Pleasant Street, within an hour, I successfully traveled to China Town, grabbed a coffee at world-renowned, Elle, caught up on spring shopping at El West, freshened up with a pedicure at Revo Nails, and dropped off my dry-cleaning at Lamont Cleaners.
If I’m lucky, I’ll have time to grab dinner at Daun Juan’s or Taqueria Nacional, with a post-ice cream trip to Mount Desert Ice Cream. The food never disappoints.
So to say the least, thanks Mt. Pleasant, for simply being the best neighborhood in DC.
Xoxo,
Adler
