Breakup letter to DC
June 28, 2023
Dear DC,
I think we need to take a break. It’s not you, it’s me.
I know, I know. The past 17 years we’ve had together have been the best years of my life. You’ve introduced me to my favorite people in the world, people that I can’t picture not being in my life.
When we were first introduced, I knew there was more to you than what you showed up front. Through years of exploring what you had to offer, traveling through your different neighborhoods on buses and trains that never seem to come on time (specifically the E4. Why is the E4 never on time? Maybe that’s something to think about for whoever you meet next). I want to thank you for all you’ve shown me. Restaurants, parks, neighborhoods, all with their unique twist, something that just makes them stand out, something that makes them seem DC.
You have been all I’ve known, and it’s hard to say goodbye. But alas, we must part. But my dearest DC, I don’t think this is the end. It’s inevitable that I’m going to take breaks from my new city, and come back to you. This isn’t goodbye. I can’t imagine not coming back, coming back to you.
Farewell, DC,
Riley Hawkinson
