With temperatures in the 90s and humidity hovering around 65%, we all know that DC is not the ideal place to be in summer. While hiding out in your room playing video games or watching Netflix might seem like the perfect place to avoid the heat, you might think twice after hearing some ideas about the best ways to stay active over the summer.
Many Jackson-Reed students suggest taking a swing at tennis this summer. It provides a high-intensity workout and even a short 30 minutes can be excellent exercise. In addition, tennis can be played with numerous people of all ages, which means you could play with your friends, parents, or even grandparents. Another recent trend is pickleball, which is a game similar to tennis but is played on a smaller court. So if running is not your forte and you are not a natural tennis player, pickleball is a great option that still provides a good workout.
Another summer activity students recommend is swimming. Dana Clocker, a junior who received a DCIAA all-league award for swimming, says “swimming keeps you cool during the summer and it is fun for all ages.” Another advantage of swimming as a summer activity is the opportunity to lie in the sun after your workout, so you can combine exercise with suntanning. Swimming is also very effective in improving cardiovascular endurance, but it is a more low-impact activity than other forms of exercise. In my opinion, swimming for exercise is not very entertaining and can result in feeling sticky and what is supposed to cool you off leaves you hotter than before. But if you enjoy the water, it could be a great choice for you.
Even though I am a soccer player, I like to mix it up in summer—my favorite summer exercise that is both high-intensity and fun is beach volleyball. While volleyball requires more skills and practice (respect to the Jackson-Reed Girls volleyball team), it can be a fun and challenging way to get exercise. Beach volleyball is also great for athletes from a wide range of sports because it requires awareness, reflexes, balance, and coordination. You can also play it with multiple friends and keep it as competitive or relaxed as you want. The Lincoln Memorial Beach volleyball courts are a great place to play. While you do have to pay $30 to reserve a court, it is a reasonable price as you get the court for 2 hours, and if you have 10-12 people playing, it costs very little per person.
Whatever plans you have over the summer, picking a sport or activity to stay active is important for your health. And remember to stay hydrated, put on sunscreen, and most importantly have fun!
