Kiyla Amora Brown, a sophomore and bright student at Jackson-Reed, passed away on April 2, 2024. Motivated and driven, Kiyla illuminated our community with her presence, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her absence will profoundly impact the school and community, echoing the magnitude of her life.

On January 23, 2008, Kiyla was born into a big family of love. Born with her twin brother Khalil, she has three other siblings, her older brother Keron, and her younger sisters Kiandre’ and Kyndal. Her parents, Kiaw McDowell and Rodney Brown, lovingly guided her journey as well.

Kiyla has been an integral member of the DCPS community for the whole of her academic career. She attended Hearst Elementary School and Alice Deal Middle School prior to Jackson-Reed. At Jackson-Reed, Kiyla joined the National Academy Foundation and the Academy for National Hospitality and Tourism. Kiyla managed to maintain her status as an honor roll student and hoped to attend college at Berkeley or Spelman, a clever scholar on all fronts.

“My condolences to the family of Kiyla Brown. I am truly going to miss Kiyla’s smile, weekly check in just to see how I was doing, and our long conversations about her AP Psychology class,” said JR music teacher Eric McMillan. 

Beyond school hours, Kiyla participated in multiple afterschool activities, including cheerleading, track, and various side jobs. She drafted a virtual storefront to sell used items, worked at an ice cream shop, and operated as an assistant at Natural Beauty Aesthetic. Kiyla’s motivation and unwavering passion serve as a testament and inspiration to us all.

The family observed Kiyla’s life on April 27, where her kind heart, loving character, and ambition were celebrated. Her thoughtful spirit will be forever remembered by the community, her friends, and her relatives. On behalf of the Jackson-Reed Beacon, we express our deepest condolences to all those affected.
