1. Volleyball finishes dominant season as DCIAA champions and DCSAA runner-up:
Entering both the DCIAA and DCSAA tournaments as the number one seeded team, the varsity volleyball team did not disappoint. Boasting a 23-3 record, the team held a 4.84 point differential in their undefeated conference play. Their run to the DCSAA finals fell short, however, in a sweeping loss to Georgetown Day School. Junior libero/outside hitter Alejandra Garcia earned DCIAA Player of the Year and a spot on the Washington Post All-Met squad as an honorable mention. Three players earned DCIAA All-League honors (Garcia and senior middle Rori Gray to the First Team and senior middle Morgan Simpson to the Second Team), while senior outside hitter Molly Reeder was named to the DCSAA All-State team. In Perette Arrington’s time as head coach, the team became the first public school to become DCSAA champions, won 21 conference titles in the last 23 seasons, and sent 14 athletes to compete collegiately.
2. Girls soccer upsets over St. John’s College High School in state playoffs:
Though the varsity girls soccer team fell short 0-3 to the Cadets in their October 3 regular season game, revenge came on a bigger stage: the road to the DCSAA Championship. The girls claimed their first win over St. John’s for the first time since the 2015 DCSAA championship in a statement-making 2-0 victory in the first round of state playoffs. Junior captain forward Rowan McCrary scored both goals in the win over the Cadets. The DCIAA championships went south for the girls, where for the first time in 13 years they fell to School Without Walls. In the state playoffs, the girls pulled a dominant 4-0 win over the Penguins just two days later that pushed them to the state final. Unfortunately, the team’s freight train of momentum would fall short in Sunday night’s finals showdown, where they lost 0-3 to Georgetown Visitation. Case Western Reserve University signee Kinzley Gootman was named to the DCSAA All-State team. The Tigers finished the season with a 14-8-3 record.
3. Girls basketball emerges second in state after DCSAA Semifinal comeback win over Eastern:
With the momentum built on the shoulders of promising underclassmen last season, the girls varsity basketball team punched their ticket to the DCSAA state finals for the second year in a row. The Tigers asserted dominance early on in the season during conference play. Seeded second in DCSAA Class A tournament, the Tigers convincingly beat Banneker with a final score of 57-29. Against third seeded Eastern, the girls’ dominance that they earned in conference play pushed over with freshman Indira Best, sophomores Aminyah Muhammed and Noa Gordon, and senior Kryslynn Stewart all seeing double-digit scoring that night at Georgetown University. However, it was heroics from the forward Gordon with a baseline jumper that took the lead with 12.1 seconds on the clock in the fourth quarter. The Tigers battled back from being down as much as 12 with five minutes to go to beat the Ramblers 54-52. However, in the finals, against Georgetown Day School, the team missed the mark 61-43. Captain Stewart was named to the DCIAA All-League First Team. Additionally, senior captain shooting guard Gabriela Eversley-Holland recently signed to play Division I basketball at the University of Vermont. Varsity basketball repeated last season’s playoff results, finishing as semifinalists in DCIAA and runner-ups in states.
