As high schoolers, we are constantly pulled in many different directions. Whether that be athletically, academically, or otherwise, the way people spend their time matters so much with only a handful of waking hours in a day. With that in mind, here are just a few of the important reasons why it is crucial in your high school experience to participate in extracurriculars:
Meeting new people: The ability to connect with individuals you otherwise might not interact with is invaluable, and being able to leave your comfort zone is a skill that will follow you far beyond high school. Whether mingling with unfamiliar people means that you collaborate for just a few minutes or for the rest of your life, attending a variety of club meetings is one way to expand your horizons and make new friends!
Enriching the mind: Though we spend all day in classes learning and applying lessons each day, extracurriculars can also be an engaging way to spend your time. That being said, participating in school sanctioned sports doesn’t excuse you not taking the time to join a club or two! Sports require a multitude of skills: teamwork, communication, adaptability, and physical toughness. Clubs can also exercise many of those same muscles; the ability to work well in a group, talk to others openly, adapt to adverse situations, and being strong can push you a long way in life.
Finding new passions: the most exciting reason to join extracurriculars is the chance to explore your interests. Out of school activities can span from the most overarching topics to the most niche concepts. Spending time with people who have unique and different outlooks can help unlock hidden love for a subject matter that would otherwise remain concealed.
The ability to pick where and when you spend your time is something that should be much more utilized and cherished as teenagers. When you have the option, try and do something you haven’t done before. Extracurriculars are a way to connect with the people and community around you, so use them as such!
