During the first senior town hall of the 2024-25 school year, administration announced that sitting on the “senior steps” in the atrium is banned.
Principal Sah Brown said that the biggest factors that drove this change were trying to keep the steps and school clean, and boosting productivity among seniors sitting in the atrium during free periods. “Unfortunately, there is a lot of trash left on the steps and when parents and other guests come into the building, that’s the first image that they see. By reducing the amount of time students sit on the steps, it will allow for the custodians to keep and maintain the cleanliness of the school,” said Brown.
Brown also commented on the name, saying, “I wasn’t aware that they were considered the “senior steps” because I’ve seen students from all grades sit on them throughout the day.” However, Brown reassured that all students will still be able to sit on the steps before and after school, and during lunch.
Many seniors have looked forward to the opportunity to sit on the steps for years. “We’ve worked hard the last three years for the privilege [to sit on the steps] and I have free periods, so I should be able to sit on them freely. Now I have to go off-campus to find a quiet place to chill and do my work,” said senior Evan Jansen.
