Give Up is the one and only album made by The Postal Service, a duo formed by Ben Gibbard, lead singer of band Death Cab for Cutie, and musician Jimmy Tamborello. The album was created long distance–Gibbard worked from Seattle and Tamborello worked from LA. The album was released in 2003, going platinum by the end of the decade.
What I personally love about this album is that it merges the genre and style of two very different artists. Gibbard’s sound–live guitar, drums, and very moody singing–is directly contrasted with Tamborello’s upbeat electronic sampling and keyboard throughout the album.
What also appeals to me about this album is the concept of freedom Gibbard has throughout it- while Death Cab For Cutie often appeals to their core audience with moody, serious songs, The Postal Service gives him the chance to sing about varying topics such as John. F Kennedy’s shooter in “Sleeping In”, 20th century actor Clark Gable in “Clark Gable”, and flying to the moon in “Such Great Heights”. All of these factors combined create an album perfect for a road trip, a fun time at a concert, and a great listen while working and studying. •
