Free food. Do I have your attention? Walking through the packed clusters of tables at the club fair, free food is how a club stands out. Here’s a rundown of club fair highlights, based on what you could get there.
History of Baking was my first stop with a promise of fresh baked cookies. These banana cookies did not disappoint. By the time I stopped back, they were all gone. This club meets Tuesdays at lunch in room P-04 in the portables. They sample baked goods and tasty treats while learning about the origins of them. They also have a weekly baking competition you can compete in at the meetings. If you love baking, food, and eating, this club is for you. Follow their instagram @jrhshistoryofbaking.
Another really engaging table was the Liberty’s Promise one. This was due to their spinning wheel and riddles for different prizes, like candy or wristbands. Liberty’s Promise learns about civic engagement, college, and careers. They have field trips where they learn about rights and community service. They explore financial aid and careers, create resumes, practice interviews, and take a college tour. This club also has locations at other schools such as Roosevelt Senior High School and E.L. Haynes Public Charter School. Learn more about them at their website www.libertyspromise.org.
Next, at the HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America) table, next to Biomed, there was a trivia-for-jolly-ranchers deal. If you answered a biomed or HOSA category related question correctly, you could get a jolly rancher. HOSA meets every other Thursday at lunch in room 428 They have community service, competitions, workshops, field trips, and more. Even if you’re not in the biomed academy, you are still encouraged to come and participate. Follow their instagram @jrhs_hosa for updates and to learn more.
At the combined table for badminton and pickleball club, there were cookies being offered, and even refilled once they ran out. The table also had a show of badminton rackets and birdies. Both clubs meet every Wednesday during lunch in the gym. Whether you’re a beginner or advanced, you can come join these clubs, have fun, and exercise.
This reviewed only a couple of the 76 clubs at the fair. There is a club at Jackson Reed for everyone, and they are a great way to make new friends who have similar interests.
