A new middle school is coming to DCPS by the 2028 school year, taking the place of the former Banneker High School building. The middle school will be a feeder for Cleveland ES, Garrison ES, and Seaton ES. These elementary schools currently feed into Cardozo Education Campus, which serves grades six through twelve, but Cardozo will convert into a traditional high school starting in the 2027-28 school year.
In March 2022, Mayor Muriel Bowser announced funding for the new middle school to open at 800 Euclid St. NW.
Families at the three elementary schools were notified of the change—that beginning in 2028 their students will feed into the temporarily named “Euclid Middle School.”
To transition into a traditional high school, Cardozo Education Campus will not enroll a sixth grade class in school year 2028-29 to begin phasing out the middle school grade levels. To accommodate the changes, the John Francis Education Campus will temporarily expand its feeder program to the three elementary schools until the new middle school opens.
In mid-November, DCPS sent out a survey to gain community input on the new middle school. The survey’s introduction said it was meant to “inform initial engagement which will focus on prospective families who may attend the new middle school.” DCPS plans to send out more surveys in the future to focus on design and construction of the new school.
