“I smell snow.” These words, famously spoken by Lorelai Gilmore of the iconic TV show Gilmore Girls, are a great way to kick off the winter season.
Baking cookies, drinking hot cocoa, and wearing cozy pajamas are only some of the best parts of this amazing time of year. While the season technically starts in December, winter weather and activities begin in November, once it gets cold enough to see your breath. Therefore no-school-November, the best part of the school year in our opinion (besides the end), can definitely be counted as a winter perk. There are a total of six days off in the month, widely spread out, leaving only one week without a day off! Following the last five day break in November for Thanksgiving, you only tough it out for three weeks until winter break!!
Secondly, winter is full of holidays. We start with Thanksgiving, then get to Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and so many more winter celebrations from around the world. Shortly after is New Year’s, followed closely by, an inferior but apparently still relevant, Valentine’s Day.
Additionally, winter weather is superior. We understand that winter might be very cold, and you do have to layer up to get to school. But, for a whole season, the weather is always the same! Unlike fall, you don’t have to change between wearing pants one day and then shorts and a tank top the next. But by far the best part of winter weather is snow; fluffy white flakes that could give you a whole day off of school. You can spend the whole day hanging out with friends, having snowball fights, going sledding and creating snow angels. And if you don’t like winter, try harder and sing “snowflakes that stay on my nose and eyelashes, silver white winters that melt into springs, these are a few of my favorite things.”
As the days drag on in winter, the sunlight certainly doesn’t. Days are getting shorter and nights are getting longer, which makes it feel like you’re getting more sleep, even if you aren’t, since it’s still dark when you wake up. Also, it makes it easier to watch the pretty sunrise and sunset, especially relevant if it’s over snow.
Overall, winter is obviously the best season. The perfect scenery and cozy aesthetic make it an amazing time to be alive. As Andy Williams once said, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year.”
