Washington DC is the home to many historical grounds of African American History. One is the Spirit of Freedom Memorial located on U Street that honors African Americans who served in the Civil War. This memorial intrigued me because it felt familiar in the way that I had been there before, and in a way of remembrance and dedication.
When talking about the memorial with my mom, I was reminded that a few years ago we had gone there with my grandma and brother to find the name of a family member from generations ago that had served in the civil war, whose name we were successfully able to find. While I still can’t recall that day very well, her reminding me of it made mer recall how beautiful the memorial was.
When walking past the memorial itself, it is easy to be mesmerized by the walls that are inscribed with names. For me what I find so unique about this memorial is that with the statue, is that along the walls surrounding it there is a dedication to everyone who played their part in the Civil War. At the same time, the names of the soldiers that could be found documented to have served in the war are displayed.
The Civil War should continue to have light shed on as it played such a crucial war in Black and American History. As an African American, it is amazing to actually see in words proof of the people who committed and dedicated their lives to our freedom. It is powerful to know people in your bloodline. Although I’ve never met them, I have family who were here a century before to fight for not just their freedom but mine and the people that will come after us. While the Civil War already felt personal to me before this finding, this made it feel even more personal to me.
The true meaning of African American History and its importance is the fact that it honors the struggles, sacrifices, and triumphs of African Americans in the ongoing fight for freedom, equality, and justice in the United States. It highlights key moments in African American history, from slavery and emancipation to the civil rights movement and beyond, symbolizing the resilience and strength of Black communities in their pursuit of liberty and social change. By commemorating their collective efforts, the memorial emphasizes the central role African Americans have played in shaping the nation’s commitment to freedom and equality, while also serving as a reminder of the work still needed to fully realize these ideals.
What makes the memorial have an even greater influence is its name. “Spirit of Freedom” is so simple yet significant. While the name is three common words, when put together, they mean something and contributed to a purpose even deeper. The Spirit of Freedom Memorial was named by its creator Ed Hamilton. The word “Spirit” symbolizes the inner drive and unbreakable determination of those who fought for freedom,
while “Freedom” highlights the central goal of emancipation and equality. Together, the name honors the collective efforts of African Americans throughout history, emphasizing that the pursuit of freedom is ongoing and transcends generations. It captures the essence of hope, resilience, and the continued fight for a more just society.
