The beginning of fall represents so many things, from the crunch of the leaves to pumpkin spiced lattes invading every menu. But my favorite of all is the fall play. If you ever find time between your never-ending AP readings and confusing math problems, the fall play is time well spent.
This year the fall play is Clue, based on the 1985 movie and the 1954 board game. In the stage production, a murder occurs during a dinner party and wacky hijinks ensue as the guests, along with a maid and a butler, try to uncover the mystery person behind the killing. The musical features well-loved cast members, such as Miss Scarlet and Mrs. Peacock.
Interestingly enough, the movie was actually a box-office flop when it first released; it confused audiences who expected a spooky murder mystery, not a slapstick dark comedy. The movie release also perplexed viewers as it featured three different endings, meaning you could have a completely different murderer depending on the theater you went to! However, as time went on, the movie acquired a cult-like fanbase and rose to classic status.
When asked about the ending of the play, Mr. Iwaniec, the head of the theatre program, remained tight-lipped, only sharing that, “the ending is surprising and pays homage to the movie.” He gave more context as to why Clue was chosen, saying, “[It’s] just really fun, [and lets] students experience the twists and turns of a murder mystery and the slips and falls of a comedy.”
Overall, the fall play is sure to be one for the books, so make sure to snag those tickets as soon as they’re available! The fall play opens November 7th, running the 8th, 14th, and 15th at the Black Box theater. Grab your friends, family, and favorite fall drink and head on down to the fall play to answer the quintessential questions: who did it, where’d they do it, and with what? •
