Thrifting is the perfect way to find unique clothing and timeless accessories, all while saving your money and the environment. As an avid thrifter, here are my favorite places to go that you can get to from Jackson-Reed by public transportation. Whether you are an expert or completely new to the thrifting game, look out for these stores:
- The St. Albans Opportunity Shop
Address: 3001 Wisconsin Ave NW, Washington, DC 20016.
Getting There: A quick bus ride on the D80.
Although it’s not quite a conventional thrift store, the Opportunity Shop is closest to Jackson-Reed and a complete diamond in the rough. This thrift store is old person central; every time I go I bring down the average age by 30 years. But this is a great thing; there is no competition for that bebe sweater vest or that vintage Tommy Hilfiger jacket. Both gems that I have found here!
Price: 5/10. The prices aren’t great for a second-hand store, but the store has a great selection and is so well run I think it’s worth it. During my most recent purchase, the items ranged from $4 for a top to $20 for a purse.
Selection: 8/10, the selection is great though it is small, but there are constantly new items being put out, so it never hurts to double check a rack.
Best for: Great vintage and name brand items.
My best find: A gorgeous suede purse for $20.
- The Planet Aid
Address: 5520 Randolph Rd, Rockville, MD 20852
Getting there: A 10 minute walk from the North Bethesda stop on the Red Line.
Have you ever seen those yellow donation bins around? This is the thrift store where those items end up! The Planet Aid is a medium sized thrift store in Rockville and rather unknown, so it’s not picked over.
Price: 6/10. The prices really vary, but veer on the more expensive side. On my most recent trip I found an Abercrombie tank top for $2.50 and got my brother a gently used Ralph Lauren polo for $16.00.
Selection: 7/10. The selection is very good and diverse, but the men’s section is more lackluster compared to the women’s.
Best for: Nice name brand athletic wear.
My best find: A pair of capri Adidas sweatpants for $6.
- The Salvation Army
Address: 3304 Kenilworth Ave, Hyattsville, MD 2078.
Getting there: Right off the North Bethesda stop of the Red Line.
This thrift store is also in Rockville making it easy to visit the Planet Aid on the same trip. Its a little dingy, but still well organized and run. Plus there is a Dunkin next door, perfect for post-thrift-sips!
Price: 10/10. This is the cheapest thrift store you will ever find, I rarely see an item above the price of $6.00.
Selection: 6/10. The women’s section is okay, but the men’s section is amazing, most of my items from here come from the men’s sections.
Best for: Unusual items.
Best find: A maroon Ralph Lauren polo for $4.
Though these are just a few of my favorite spots,if you have a ride make sure to check out Unique and Goodwill locations! Happy thrifting, I hope to see your finds in the hallways! •
