Whether or not you tuned in every night at 9pm, I’m sure that you’ve heard about Love Island, the raunchy reality show that has taken the internet by storm. From “Hurricane Huda” and “Amaya Papaya” to “Nicolandria,” this summer was packed with drama, love, backstabbing, and unbreakable friendships. Here’s everything you need to know to keep up with Love Island USA season seven.
Love Island is a reality TV show that puts ten single people, five girls and five boys, in a villa together for six weeks where they search for true love. Throughout the seventh season, a total of thirty people cycled in and out of the villa. Couples participate in seemingly never-ending challenges to “test their connection,” though it may seem like the show is trying to break the couples up (that would be crazy, right?).
Finding Love
This season, the final four couples were Nic and Olandria, Huda and Chris, Iris and Pepe, and the winners were Amaya and Bryan. This season all four couples in the finale were “coupled up” for less than a week, and (for some reason) believed they were in love, leaving the villa together. It should come as no surprise that only one of the four are still together, and two of the “relationships” ended when the boy cheated on their girl. While entertaining, the chance of a successful love story from Love Island is about as likely as winning the lottery.
Islander Elections
When you hear it’s time to vote on the Fijian villa, you know it’s bad news. While some people vote for president, islanders vote on who they have to send home. No matter the circumstances, their friends act like they’re about to get executed, never to be seen again. Each time someone left, we saw tears, hugs, and emotional goodbye speeches, and only in some cases did it make sense. Just when couples started to get close a vote was called, and suddenly the strongest connection was broken up.
Summer of Nicknames
You’ve undoubtedly heard a lot of nicknames for the contestants over the summer. Perhaps the most notable is Hurricane Huda. Though she thought from the beginning she had the strongest couple, cracks quickly began to form when she and Jeremiah fought over every little thing. Then one day she got so mad she burst, screaming at everyone and starting fights.
Next up, and a personal favorite of mine, is Amaya Papaya. Though her efforts to find love were unsuccessful at first, she quickly won the hearts of viewers everywhere. After rhyming her name with “papaya” once, the nickname caught on, and her popularity gave her the win.
Finally, Nicolandria, the ultimate slow burn. While both Nic and Olandria were in strong couples at the beginning (not with each other), viewers couldn’t help but see their connection. People made edits and relentlessly shipped them, having barely any hope it would happen. Eventually, “love” did prevail, after nearly a month, and they ended up in the finale together.
The End
In the end, this season was full of losses, couples that never were, lifelong friendships, and the peoples’ princess, Amaya, who walked away 50 thousand dollars richer. Oh yeah, and some got relationships too, but who cares about that part?
So what makes Love Island as entertaining as it is? The drama, the unpredictability, the suspense, or the summer boredom that will make people watch anything that’s put in front of them? If it was called Love Peak and the villa was on a Swiss mountain, released in the middle of winter, would anyone watch it? Regardless of the reason, being invested in random strangers’ lives is top tier entertainment, and as the days get cold, it’s nice to think of times when I had no APUSH readings to finish and I could spend an hour every night watching these love stories unfold.
