When Robert Griffin lll was drafted 2nd overall in the 2012 draft, he instantly became the face of the Washington Redskins franchise. There were high expectations that he lived up to in his rookie year. He broke multiple records and took the team to the playoffs. Since then, it’s been downhill for him. Multiple injuries and the inability to consistently replicate the same type of stats he produced in his rookie year, have lead to his benching for stretches of games. Although he has shown signs of greatness and upside, there have been some terrible stretches mixed in. Which have lead to Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy getting shots at starter. With both showing mediocrity and seeming to lack the skills required of a starting quarterback in the NFL, the situation in Washington is dire.
Coach Jay Gruden called the Redskins quarterback situation a “good problem to have,” which feels just a little bit optimistic. Dan Schneider, the Redskins owner doesn’t have the best record with quarterbacks. With them only playing a full season, four of the 16 seasons he’s owned the team for. The biggest reason for that is how hard it is to find a starting level quarterback in the NFL. This is why the Redskins should be sticking with RGlll, rather than Kirk Cousins who was given the starting spot at the end of august, so once he recovers from his concussion, the team should give the former Heisman winner one more chance to show if he is able to revive his career, and be the same player they drafted back in 2012.
Last Sunday against the Dolphins Cousins looked only so-so. His completion percentage was passable but he threw 2 interceptions (one on a tough 3rd and 20 and the other on a great pick) which still should have been avoided. The offense just didn’t run smoothly. The blame is not only on him but he was a big factor in the offense’s inability to score. On what could have been the winning drive he was 3 of 6 passing and was very unimpressive. Despite this, he still has the backing of his coach.
This season, like the last few, will be interesting in Washington, although there will most likely be a record fans will want the forget. The Redskins play the St. Louis Rams today at 1
