On Thursday the Girls Varsity basketball team made history in the UDC gymnasium. The tigers capped off a long and tough season by taking home the DCIAA title for the first time in 23 years. In doing so, the tigers have proven to the city once and for all that they are a force to be reckoned with.
“Every play was memorable,” said senior shooting guard Tytilao Green of the Tiger’s 59-45 championship victory over Anacostia. “The excitement on me and my teammates’ faces when the game was over was priceless. Plus, taking the trophy home my senior year was truly special.”
This victory was especially meaningful for second year coach Nadira Ricks, who played on the team during her own years at Wilson.
“It was surreal for me, because I was part of the ‘88 team who won the championship here. As an athlete it’s the greatest feeling in the world, especially when you work hard, practice, and put in the time.” Ricks credits her team’s victory to heart, pride, and a strong will to win. You can’t hide that Tiger pride! •
