Nalgene and flannel lovers alike rejoiced at the news of a new REI opening up in Washington, DC. Not only is this the outdoor equipment company’s first store located in the District, it is part of their “Flagship Series” stores that are bigger and include a wide range of classes and outdoor excursions. Currently REI has five flagship stores located in Seattle, Denver, Minneapolis, New York City and now Washington, DC.
The new store is located across the street from the NoMa Metro station, and is housed in the former Uline Arena, which hosted professional hockey and basketball games as well as The Beatles first US concert. In honor of the opening REI hosted a full weekend celebration from opening day Friday, October 21st to Sunday, October 23rd. Activities included live music, s’mores, a climbing wall, and stands from brands like Patagonia and Marmot. With over 51,000 square feet of apparel, tents, bikes, and backpacks, this store will be sure to have everything a Wilson student needs for their next hiking trip, or flannel Friday.
