Student Government Association collected canned food from December 12 to December 21 in an effort to help the community. The decision was made by the SGA in order to find a way to try and help the Wilson community give back during the holidays.
“We wanted to provide food to the homeless because shelters are especially needing during the holiday season,” says Class President Allie Schwalb. Hundreds of pounds of canned food were collected over the two week period, that the were donated to the Capital Area Food Bank on the 22. Students took it upon themselves to bring their cans to english teacher Lisa Grymes’ room.
Wilson students themselves were incentivized by being given half an hour of community service for every can of food that they donated, with a maximum of 10 hours available. “We heard feedback from students that were looking for community service opportunities so we thought it would be a good way to help out students and the DC community.” says Schwalb.
