After falling short to St. Albans in the DCSAA finals last year, the Jackson-Reed Varsity Baseball team is looking to bring the DCSAA title back to Fort Reno.
So far, the team remains undefeated in DCSAA and DCIAA play, having played all their regular season games against in-conference teams. Overall, the team is 13-6-3 as of April 23rd.
Fresh off the team’s yearly service trip to the Dominican Republic, they have built a tight-knit and resilient team, as well as been able to prepare for their regular season with games against both local teams and pro baseball academies in the DR.
Senior Ben Shapiro remarked that “the best part about the trip is being able to share a mutual love for baseball with the local communities that transcends the language barrier between us.”
The team’s season started off rocky, with five losses and two ties, all to non-DCSAA and DCIAA teams.
However, after a resounding 7-3 win over Sidwell, the team has been picking up momentum heading into playoff season.
One of the defining moments of their regular season games was the Tigers rematch of the DCSAA finals last year against St. Albans. While the team had a rough top of the first inning, with St. Albans scoring 5 runs, the team was able to bounce back following back to back doubles by Seniors Tommy Gore and Ben Shapiro.
The teams went back and forth for the remaining six innings, with the team fighting back in the bottom of the fifth to comeback from being behind two runs with a score of 10-8. Senior Alex Ouzts drove home three runners with a double that put the Tigers up 11-10.
The game ultimately ended 11-10 for the Tigers and they were able to maintain their streak of DCSAA wins and get retribution for their state final loss last year.
Sophomore Walker Alexander said he was “very impressed how the guys stuck with it after a tough first inning to get the win.”
Additionally, one of the most exciting developments for the Tigers this season has been the addition of Alex Nehrer, the team’s only female player. As the only girl on an all-boys team, Nehrer has been embracing the challenge and the opportunity to play “with lots of talented people, which has pushed me to grow as a player.”
She added how “being on the team has been really fun, there’s a really good community, and we all have a really good dynamic.”
Her presence on the team has been well received by all her teammates, and her determination and skills continue to make a significant impact.
Looking forward, the team is gearing up for playoffs with one goal in mind: the DCSAA championship. Junior Lee Eckstein emphasized the team’s strong preparation and palpable ambition for another state championship saying, “we have one goal and it is to win a state championship, if we play together and stay a family we can accomplish anything this year.”
Alexander emphasized this saying, that he is “proud of how the team has won many of our tough DCSAA games and how we remain undefeated in that conference.”
Currently, the Tigers are looking in great shape for another DCSAA Championship run.
So far this season, they have played and beaten most of the other DCSAA teams with a 7-3 win over Sidwell, 9-5 win over Gonzaga, 2-0 win over Maret, 11-10 win over St. Albans, a 13-5 win over Latin, and a 13-3 win over Schools Without Walls.
Shapiro, Eckstein, and Alexander are all optimistic about the team’s chances with Shapiro adding that his expectations are to “end my high school career with a high note and win a state championship.”
With the season coming to a close, the Tigers are positioned for a deep playoff run and have only one thing on their mind: to win. •
