The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) confirmed on Friday that a second shooting took place in the vicinity of Jackson-Reed on Friday, May 8, the day after Flowers was shot.
MPD said in a statement that “officers responded to the report of a shooting in the 4000 block of Chesapeake Street” around 4:30 p.m. “Upon arrival, officers found evidence of a shooting, but witnesses told police the victim fled the scene,” the statement said. It asked anyone with information about the shooting to call 202-727-9099 or text 50411.
A community member posted on the Tenleytown listserv that he witnessed the incident. The poster, who identified himself as Tom Hall, wrote that he saw three teenagers running from the Fort Reno baseball field and into the parking garage at 4014 Chesapeake Street.
Hall said that one teen jumped over the wall of the parking garage and back onto the street. One of the other teens fired what Hall described as a black semiautomatic handgun at him, then ran away, he said. The victim was not struck, but Hall said the teen seemed “very nervous and was watching in all directions.”
An anonymous poster on the DC Urban Moms forum wrote that “a young man … jumped out of the second level garage and after [landing] was shot at.”
Hall said that MPD arrived at the scene, but the victim refused to talk to officers. He said MPD officers found a shell casing at the scene. At the same time, a team of Drug Enforcement Administration officers entered the parking garage, Hall said, and departed in a vehicle with Mexican license plates.
Another Tenleytown listserv user posted about gun activity the same day, where “audible shots were fired,” presumably from the same shooting.
This poster said that students from CommuniKids, a language immersion preschool located one block from JR, were in Fort Reno at the time, had to evacuate, and did not go outside the following Monday.
It was not clear whether the second incident was connected to the shooting of Flowers.
