Running a business as a student is a wonder that I could only dream of. Managing schoolwork, extracurriculars, a social life, plus the financial and executive decisions for your enterprise? That’s something I couldn’t handle. Junior Quincy Berney can, though. Her self-made business is built on selling art and handmade press-on nails.
In her interview, Quincy explained that her history with art goes back years, and it wasn’t her intention at first to start a business. When asked what inspired her to start selling products, she said, “I really, like, love art. What it was, is these were my hobbies.” She even added half-jokingly, “I kind of figured out along the way that I could, you know… make a profit.”
While she wasn’t giving herself credit for it, it’s hard not to admire her entrepreneurial spirit. It can easily be brushed off as a hobby that got turned into something more, but is there anything smarter than making money off of doing something you enjoy and use to express yourself?
I also interviewed Junior Lily Doiron, a close friend of Quincy. In our conversation, she emphasized how much her friend’s skills had improved due to dedication to the art. In general, Lily touched on many times the sheer quality and personalization that Quincy provides. She proudly told the story, “I also have another friend, who, in ceramics class, was working with the clay, wedging it. I’m not sure if whoever’s reading this is completely versed with what wedging clay is, but it’s hard, okay? And the nails, they didn’t fall off…they are extremely durable.” Lily also talked about how Quincy personalizes her nails and art to the point of mixing colors herself to get the perfect shade and making a nail set inspired by a client’s favorite childhood book. If that’s not dedication, I don’t know what is.
Quincy did take time to detail, though, that her business wasn’t too formal compared to others, and for her, something more relaxed is what she preferred! If anyone is interested in custom press ons or art, make sure to DM Quincy on Instagram @quincyy.lb! •
