If you are looking for a sport that’s fast-paced, social, and perfect for summer, beach volleyball is worth checking out. Combining teamwork with constant movement, beach volleyball keeps players engaged from start to finish. As the weather gets warmer, this physically demanding, but fun sport is only growing in popularity. On any summer weekend, the sand courts near the National Mall downtown fill with rallies, diving saves, and crowds of players.
While it may look similar to indoor volleyball, beach volleyball has its own unique rules and style of play. So, what exactly makes beach volleyball so different? Unlike indoor volleyball, which has six players per team, beach volleyball only has two. Because of the smaller teams, each player is responsible for every part of the game, including serving, setting, hitting, and defense. Matches are played in sets, and the first team to win two sets wins overall. If each team wins one set, a third set is played to decide the winner. Playing on sand also adds an extra challenge, making movement harder and requiring more endurance. This summer sport is an amazing way to get exercise, while also having fun.
Beach volleyball is also becoming a popular social activity for teens and families during the summer months. Many people play casually with friends rather than competitively, making it easy for beginners to play. Freshman Billie Himmelman, who plays for the Jackson Reed JV Volleyball team, mentioned that “beach volleyball is a great way to get out and have fun with friends, even if you don’t play volleyball.” Himmelman often plays on the courts near the National Mall, where groups gather throughout the summer to play games and practice skills.
Whether you play competitively or just for fun, beach volleyball continues to grow as a favorite warm-weather activity. With its combination of teamwork, exercise, and social interaction, the sport offers something for almost everyone. As summer begins, head to the sand courts and give the sport a try! •
