Almost immediately, students have debuted a new type of footwear for the changing weather: flip flops. Sure, they’re just a shoe – but how do the students of Jackson-Reed feel about having their dogs out in school?
Freshman Zoe Hayes says flip flops are “super cool,” but not for everyone. She thinks, “If your toes aren’t done, [with nail polish] you shouldn’t be wearing flip flops.” A recent trend some students have started to participate in is “Toes Out Tuesday.” This consists of wearing open-toed shoes every Tuesday, with no socks. It’s a simple way of celebrating the incoming warm weather, and shows that people are more than ready for summer break.
“Flops are pretty sweet…I like wearing them because they’re comfy,” says junior Graham Cooksey. In his opinion, warm weather is the only acceptable time to be wearing flip flops. “One time my friend wore flops with socks and I did not approve.” Another student was in agreement, saying, “If you’re wearing pants, you shouldn’t be wearing flip flops. That just shows it’s too cold outside to have your feet showing.”
Since there are mixed reviews about wearing flip flops to school, students were also interviewed on their favorite summer shoe. Freshman Kennedy Proctor says, “My favorite summer shoe is Yeezy slides with socks.” Hayes says that Birkenstocks are the way to go, and a staple for the summertime. On the contrary, Cooksey is pro-flops all the way, even listing his favorite brands, “I love Rainbows or Olukais.”
Overall, Jackson-Reed students have different opinions on flip flops. However, one thing is clear: summer fashion is officially back. Whether students prefer Birkenstocks, Yeezys, or Rainbows, warm weather definitely gives everyone a chance to show off their own summer style. •
