From its very inception, DC has been shaped by music, and you seem to find a new sound anywhere you go.
DC boasts a number of notable music venues, ranging from massive mainstream arenas to smaller underground clubs. Here are the best:
- 9:30 Club: An iconic and historic venue, the 9:30 Club holds an energetic, atmospheric quality at which countless famous and underground musicians have all performed. Named the third-best venue in the nation by Rolling Stone, the 9:30 Club truly has something for everyone. In my experience, I have gotten to see Yo La Tengo there and hope to see many more bands!
- The Anthem: Located at the Wharf, the Anthem has hosted a number of incredibly famous and major musicians. Recently, notable musicians like Lorde, Patti Smith, and Blood Orange have played here. A larger venue and often more expensive than the 9:30 Club, the Anthem tends to host artists with larger fan bases. I have seen Lucy Dacus and Nilüfer Yanya, who both filled the Anthem with an energy that has captivated audiences on a massive scale.
- Black Cat: Located near U Street, the Black Cat is a long-standing hub for live music, known for hosting alternative and punk bands. Its smaller size creates an energetic yet intimate atmosphere with a nostalgic charm. Since opening in 1993, the Black Cat is iconic for its noisy but still welcoming vibe. Welcoming audiences of all ages, I have seen Snail Mail here.
- Howard Theatre: Opened in 1910, the Howard Theatre was a premier stage for Black entertainers. It has hosted legendary musicians like Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, and Marvin Gaye, playing a large role as one of the first major theaters for Black audiences. Its historic charm blends with modern amenities, hosting all kinds of music genres today and even fun dance parties like the Heated Rivalry Rave! •
